Israeli Man Charged for Collaborating with Iranian Intelligence on Espionage Tasks

The Israeli Attorney General's Office filed charges on Friday against Eli Lavon, a 21-year-old from Jerusalem, accusing him of collaborating with Iranian intelligence operatives. According to the indictment submitted to the Jerusalem District Court, Lavon was recruited by agents identifying themselves as "Sina" and "Alexander," who worked for Iran's intelligence services. Between late 2025 and early 2026, Lavon carried out various espionage activities in Israel, including filming the Jerusalem Central Bus Station, documenting a building in the Bukharim neighborhood, and covertly planting a cigarette box with a note stating "the work is complete" in the Hadar Mall.

Lavon also purchased a USB device, wrapped it in a 50-shekel bill, and hid it in a restaurant in Jerusalem, all while recording his actions and sending the footage to his handlers. For these tasks, he received approximately $1,379 in cryptocurrency payments from the foreign agents. The investigation was conducted by the Jerusalem District Police's Central Unit and the Shin Bet security service.

Attorney Ronit Shnitzer Yakobi from the Jerusalem District Prosecutor's Office emphasized the dangers of seemingly minor requests on platforms like Telegram, which can quickly escalate into cooperation with hostile foreign entities. The indictment charges Lavon with contact with a foreign agent and providing information to the enemy that could benefit it. Alongside the indictment, prosecutors requested Lavon's detention until the conclusion of legal proceedings.
