Israeli Man Charged for Espionage Activities on Behalf of Iranian Intelligence

The Israeli State Prosecutor's Office has filed an indictment against Eli Lavon from Jerusalem for collaborating with agents of the Iranian intelligence service. Lavon allegedly conducted various espionage tasks within Israel in late 2025 and early 2026, receiving payments in digital currencies in return. The indictment details that Lavon communicated with operatives identifying themselves as "Sina" and "Alexander," who were Iranian intelligence agents. Despite knowing the foreign nature of these contacts, Lavon continued cooperating and carried out assignments such as photographing Jerusalem's central bus station and a building in the Bukharim neighborhood. He also planted a cigarette box containing a note stating "the work is complete" in the Hadar Mall and hid a USB device wrapped in a 50-shekel bill inside a Jerusalem restaurant, documenting these actions and sending the evidence to his handlers.

Lavon received approximately $1,379 in digital currency payments from the two agents for his services. Attorney Ronit Snitzer Yakobi from the Jerusalem District Prosecutor's Office emphasized the dangers of seemingly minor tasks leading to cooperation with hostile foreign entities and highlighted the importance of vigilance against such recruitment attempts via digital platforms. The investigation was conducted by the Jerusalem District Central Unit and the Shin Bet security service. The charges against Lavon include contact with a foreign agent and providing information to the enemy that could benefit them. The prosecution has also requested Lavon's detention until the conclusion of legal proceedings.
