Israeli Court Sentences Burglar to 21 Years for Aggravated Rape in Gedera

The Central District Court in Lod sentenced Barkat Abu Esa to 21 years in prison for aggravated rape, child abuse, and burglary at a residence in Gedera. The court also imposed a suspended sentence and ordered Abu Esa to pay 200,000 shekels in compensation to the victim. Abu Esa, who worked at a construction site opposite the victim's home, broke into her second-floor apartment late at night. He attacked her, restrained her with tape while her two-year-old son was present and crying nearby, and then raped her after threatening to kill her. After the assault, he returned the child to his mother.

The victim's four-year-old son later demonstrated remarkable presence of mind by freeing his mother with a knife, enabling her escape. Abu Esa fled the scene following this. The judges, led by retired President Ruth Lorch and including judges Ami Kovo and Devora Atar, described the crime as a "disturbing and prolonged event," emphasizing the severity of the offenses, especially given the presence of the victim's young children during the attack. They noted that the violence inflicted in front of the child constituted additional child abuse, further aggravating the crime's severity.
