Bedouin Man Sentenced to 21 Years for Raping Woman in Gedera in Front of Her Child

The Central District Court in Lod sentenced Barkat Abu Esa to 21 years in prison for the aggravated rape of a woman in her home in Gedera. The court also imposed suspended sentences and ordered him to pay 200,000 shekels in compensation to the victim. Abu Esa was convicted of breaking into the woman’s second-floor apartment late at night, physically assaulting her, and binding her hands, feet, and eyes with duct tape while her two-year-old son was present and crying nearby.

According to the verdict summary, Abu Esa threatened to kill the woman, removed her child from the room, and raped her while she was crying. He then returned the toddler to her side. Later, the woman’s four-year-old son woke up and used a knife to free his mother, prompting Abu Esa to flee. The judges, led by retired President Ruth Lorch, described the crime as a "prolonged and disturbing event," emphasizing the severity of the assault occurring in front of the victim’s young children, which also constituted child abuse.

The court’s ruling highlights the aggravating circumstances of the attack, including the presence of the victim’s children during the assault and the psychological and physical abuse inflicted on both the woman and her toddler. The case drew attention to the brutal nature of the crime and the impact on the family involved.
