Israeli Court Sentences Man to 21 Years for Brutal Rape in Gedera

The Lod District Court sentenced Barkat Abu Asa to 21 years in prison for the rape of a woman in Gedera in February 2023. Abu Asa was convicted in April of aggravated rape, breaking and entering, and child abuse. The court also imposed a suspended sentence and ordered him to pay the victim 200,000 shekels in compensation.

According to the indictment, Abu Asa broke into the victim's home late at night wearing a mask and carrying thick adhesive tape. The woman, who was breastfeeding her infant son, woke up and screamed for help. Abu Asa then assaulted her, restraining her hands and feet, and threatened to kill her if she did not remain silent. The rape occurred in front of the woman's children.

The key evidence leading to Abu Asa's conviction was DNA found at the scene, alongside phone tracking data placing him at the location. The court rejected his denial of presence at the crime scene.

The incident sparked public outrage and protests over security concerns. On the day of the attack, National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir visited Gedera and promised to restore safety for residents.

Separately, three northern residents were arrested on suspicion of raping three local girls, and a prominent gynecologist was convicted of sexually assaulting nine patients by abusing his position.
