Hapoel Tel Aviv Extends Tomer Ginat's Contract Through 2030 Amid Complex Negotiations

Hapoel Tel Aviv announced on Monday the extension of forward Tomer Ginat's contract for four more seasons, securing his stay until the summer of 2030. Ginat, considered a symbol of the club, had previously upgraded his salary three times since rejoining the team four years ago, with his prior contract set to expire next summer. However, this extension came after a challenging season marked by injuries and dissatisfaction with the diminishing role of Israeli players on the team.

Tensions escalated due to a salary dispute linked to the dollar exchange rate, nearly leading to a breakdown in negotiations. Ginat expressed a desire to leave, while club officials, including CEO Ofer Yanai, insisted that he and teammate Bar Timor were not released. The situation seemed poised to worsen until Hapoel Jerusalem, a potential destination for Ginat, withdrew from pursuing him, anticipating prolonged negotiations.

Subsequently, Yanai offered Ginat a four-year deal worth $3.5 million, which after negotiations was finalized at approximately $1 million per season. The contract includes annual exit options allowing Ginat to leave after each summer if circumstances do not improve, with a buyout clause of around $300,000 protecting the club financially. Currently, Hapoel Tel Aviv is not deep in the power forward position but plans to sign Jacob Topin and seek additional players for that role. With an expected roster of at least 11 foreign players plus Kadin Carrington, Ginat may not feature in EuroLeague games next season, potentially leading to renewed contract discussions in 2025.
