Meta's AI Glitch Causes Mass Instagram Account Suspensions in Israel and Worldwide

A wave of account suspensions triggered by Meta's AI algorithm has spread from WhatsApp to Instagram, affecting users in Israel and globally. Many users report receiving vague community guideline violation warnings leading to account suspensions, with no clear explanation or support from Meta. Cybersecurity expert Osher Revach, who leads a support group for affected users in Israel, was himself suddenly blocked on Instagram, highlighting the severity of the issue. The problem appears linked to a malfunctioning AI combined with exploitation of security vulnerabilities by malicious actors demanding ransoms for account restoration.

Verified users worldwide have expressed frustration over the lack of human support, with some Meta representatives privately admitting the bans were accidental but unable to fix them promptly. Reports on social media platforms like X reveal that the AI mistakenly suspended thousands of accounts, and some attackers have exploited this chaos to extort victims.

Revach advises users to immediately file an appeal through the Instagram app by providing a valid email and phone number, then selecting the "Request another review" option instead of uploading ID documents. The review process typically takes 24 hours to four days, during which the account remains invisible to others. This method has successfully restored Revach’s own account within a day. Experts warn against paying hackers or intermediaries promising to recover accounts, as these are often scams preying on desperate users.

Meta has yet to issue an official statement or software fix, and the situation remains fluid as more information emerges. Users are urged to act quickly to avoid permanent loss of their personal and business profiles.
