Widespread Meta outage knocks users out of Instagram, Facebook and Messenger
A broad technical outage hit Meta services on Friday, leaving many users around the world unexpectedly logged out of Instagram, Facebook and Messenger. Reports said some apps would not load at all, while others were abruptly kicked off accounts and then met repeated error messages when trying to sign back in.
Downdetector quickly showed thousands of complaints after the disruption began. Instagram reports jumped within minutes from a normal level of about 25 to thousands, with most users citing account logouts, failed feed loading, or login problems.
The issue was not limited to Instagram. Many users also reported similar problems on Facebook and Messenger, including sudden disconnections and an inability to re-enter their accounts. On X, formerly Twitter, users rapidly posted trying to determine whether the outage was local or a broader global failure affecting Meta services.
Meta confirmed the outage and said it was aware of the difficulties users were experiencing and was working to restore full service as soon as possible. The company had not yet said what caused the disruption or when it would end.
