Meta Acknowledges Possible Errors in WhatsApp Account Blocks in Israel

Meta has responded for the first time to a wave of WhatsApp account blocks affecting users in Israel, admitting that its enforcement systems can sometimes mistakenly block accounts. The company did not confirm a widespread technical fault nor explain why dozens of Israelis received messages over the weekend stating they could no longer access their accounts. The issue was initially reported on Saturday night by the Israeli Internet Association, which received numerous complaints from users blocked without clear reasons.

Meta stated it regularly acts against users who abuse the platform and blocks accounts to protect the public. However, it acknowledged that its systems occasionally err and said it works quickly to reverse wrongful blocks and restore access. Some users reported regaining access within about 12 hours after submitting an appeal, while others remain blocked despite contacting Meta.

According to WhatsApp’s official help center, users who believe their account was mistakenly blocked should use the "Request a review" option within the app. The review status can be tracked in WhatsApp, but if the appeal option is unavailable, the block is considered permanent. The Israeli Internet Association advises users to back up important data by exporting chats, with or without media, to avoid losing information.

There is currently no evidence that the blocking wave is continuing, nor has Meta officially declared the issue resolved. Users are cautioned to appeal only through WhatsApp and avoid external services that promise account recovery for payment or request verification codes.
