Wave of WhatsApp Account Blocks Hits Israeli Users Without Warning

On July 26, many WhatsApp users in Israel discovered their accounts had been blocked unexpectedly, despite not engaging in any suspicious activity. One user, Daniel, reported being abruptly logged out from WhatsApp Web and her phone with a message stating her account was blocked. She described the disruption as distressing, given her reliance on WhatsApp for work communications. After contacting support, she was advised to wait 24 hours before taking further action, but she encountered delays and difficulties receiving verification codes, taking two hours to regain access.

Another affected user, media professional Eyal Tiran, also experienced a permanent account block shortly after submitting a review request. He noted that WhatsApp is central to his work, involving hundreds of groups and important contacts. Despite previous temporary blocks being resolved, this time he was told no further appeals were possible. He has reached out to Meta Israel for assistance.

Account recovery expert Oser Revach, who manages a Facebook group called "They Blocked My WhatsApp," reported nearly 300 new cases on the day, with a significant increase in blocks since the start of the week. He estimates 10-15% of blocked users successfully appeal and regain access, while 60% face repeated block-unblock cycles. Some users receive permanent bans requiring intervention from Meta's legal department in the US. Revach suspects a malfunction in WhatsApp's AI moderation system may be causing the surge.

To address blocks, users are advised to file appeals through the app and wait up to 24 hours for review. After account restoration, Revach recommends cautious use: avoid messaging unknown contacts, refrain from adding people to groups, disable automatic media downloads, and avoid WhatsApp Web and automation tools. He warns that even permanent bans are lifted after 60 days, cautioning users against paying third parties promising quicker fixes.

Meta has been contacted for comment, with a response pending. This wave of unexplained WhatsApp account blocks has disrupted many Israeli users’ communication and raised concerns about the platform’s moderation processes.
