Israeli Users Face Widespread WhatsApp Account Blocks Amid Unexplained Glitch

The Israeli Internet Association has issued a warning about an unusual surge in WhatsApp account blocks across Israel over the weekend. Dozens of users reported their accounts were blocked without clear reasons, and many have been unable to regain access despite submitting appeals. The association suspects this may be a broader issue that could escalate in the coming days and urges users to back up important data stored on WhatsApp immediately.

Complaints were directed to the association’s Safe Internet helpline after users suddenly found themselves locked out. The association has urgently contacted Meta, WhatsApp’s parent company, requesting an explanation and assistance for affected users, but no clear response has been received so far. The association emphasized that WhatsApp is installed on 99% of Israel’s adult population, making it a critical communication tool, and only Meta can resolve the problem and restore access.

The association strongly advises users not to pay third parties who claim they can unblock accounts for a fee, stating there is currently no known method to bypass the blocks except through official appeals via WhatsApp’s blocking message. They also recommend that unaffected users back up their photos, documents, chats, and other important information and maintain alternative communication channels with family, friends, and colleagues in case their accounts become blocked.

The association highlighted that this wave of blocks underscores the risks of overreliance on a single centralized app that does not provide sufficient support during outages. They called on the Israeli government to demand full transparency from Meta and immediate solutions for Israelis left without access to this essential communication platform.

Meta responded that it continuously works to preempt users who abuse the platform by blocking their accounts to protect user security. They acknowledged occasional errors and said they strive to quickly rectify such cases to restore user access to WhatsApp.
