Meta's WhatsApp User Blocks Raise Security Concerns in Israel

A sudden and unexplained wave of WhatsApp user blocks in Israel has alarmed security experts, who fear it may be a deliberate policy by Meta to disrupt civilian communication during crises. Strategic security advisor Shlomo Peretz warned on Channel 14's "Israel Morning" program that these blocks are not technical glitches but potentially hostile actions by Meta against Israeli users. He suggested that decisions by certain Meta personnel, possibly without higher authorization, might be politically motivated to harm Israel's communication capabilities.

Peretz emphasized the severity of the situation, noting that Meta's policy does not appear to support maintaining normal communication for Israelis, which could have dire consequences if such disruptions occur during wartime or national emergencies. Given that 99 percent of Israelis rely on WhatsApp as their primary communication tool, any intentional shutdown could paralyze civilian coordination and government control.

The unusual blocking incidents have raised fears that Meta's parent company might be using civilian communication infrastructure as a political or strategic lever.
