WhatsApp Users in Israel Face Mass Account Blocks Amid Ongoing Technical Issues

In recent days, hundreds of WhatsApp users in Israel have experienced sudden account blocks without clear reasons, prompting the Israeli Internet Association to urge users to back up important data immediately. The association reported receiving dozens of complaints over the weekend from users who lost access to their accounts, including chats, groups, and personal or business information, even after submitting appeals through the app. Despite requests for urgent assistance and explanations from Meta, the company has yet to clarify the cause of the widespread blocks, which appear to be a technical malfunction still unresolved.

The Israeli Internet Association emphasized WhatsApp's critical role in Israel, where 99% of the adult population uses the app, and noted that only Meta can restore blocked accounts. They warned users against paying third parties claiming to unblock accounts, advising to rely solely on official appeal channels. The association also called on the Israeli government to demand full transparency from Meta and immediate solutions for affected users.

Meta responded by stating it continuously works to prevent abuse on its platform by blocking accounts that violate policies but acknowledged occasional errors. The company assured it is working to quickly rectify mistaken blocks to restore user access. The current wave of blocks highlights concerns about the heavy reliance on a single communication platform in Israel and the lack of adequate support during technical failures.
