Meta Acknowledges Error in WhatsApp Account Blocks and Begins Restoring Access

Following a wave of sudden WhatsApp account blocks worldwide, including in Israel, Meta has officially confirmed that some accounts were mistakenly suspended. Users reported their accounts being abruptly disabled and placed under "review" without prior warning or clear explanation, leading to widespread complaints on social media platforms such as X and Threads. Meta has now started restoring access to affected users.

The company stated it continuously works to prevent abuse of its service by blocking accounts to protect other users, but admitted errors occurred in this recent enforcement action. Meta did not clarify the cause of the mass account reviews, whether it was a technical glitch, or if certain regions were disproportionately impacted. Users attempting to log in during the review period saw messages indicating their account activity and device details were being checked against WhatsApp's terms of service, with decisions expected within about 24 hours.

In a statement to TechCrunch, Meta emphasized efforts to quickly correct the mistake and reinstate affected accounts. Despite this rare admission, many questions remain unanswered, including the scale of the issue and the specifics of what went wrong in Meta's enforcement mechanisms. For many users, including Israelis, this marks the first official recognition from Meta that some account blocks were erroneous and that restoration is underway.
