Israeli Football Club Ironi Tiberias Indicted Over Illegal Player Infusions

The Israel Football Association filed criminal charges on Monday against Ironi Tiberias football club in connection with illegal intravenous infusions given to players. The indictment includes allegations of aiding drug use, administering prohibited substances under aggravating circumstances, violating the association's medical regulations, fraud, collusion, and ignoring judicial rulings.

The charges accuse key club officials, including suspended owner Miki Beitan, head coach Eliran Hodeda, the technical manager, and fitness coach, of authorizing and administering infusions contrary to World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) rules. The indictment states the infusions were given without medical consultation or supervision, lacked medical justification and proper protocols, violated general medical laws, and endangered players' health and careers without professional purpose.

Furthermore, the indictment alleges attempts to obstruct the investigation, led by Beitan despite a court order barring his involvement in club management. This case arose after a formal complaint by F.C. Ashdod, claiming Ironi Tiberias players received excessive fluid infusions before a May 3 playoff match, which Tiberias won 3-0. The volume allegedly exceeded 100 milliliters within 12 hours, breaching anti-doping limits except under specific medical conditions.

Earlier this month, the anti-doping agency provisionally suspended five players, the coach, and two staff members pending investigation. Ironi Tiberias denies wrongdoing, asserting the players received only saline infusions within permitted volumes and under professional supervision.

The case highlights serious concerns over player health and regulatory compliance in Israeli professional football, with further legal proceedings expected.
