Maccabi Haifa Signs Nigel Lonwijk as New Central Defender for Three Seasons

Maccabi Haifa officially signed Nigel Lonwijk, a 1.95-meter tall Dutch-Surinamese defender, on July 24, 2026, for a three-year contract. Lonwijk, who previously played for Wolverhampton Wanderers (Wolves) and spent several seasons on loan across English and European clubs, is expected to be a physical and speedy addition to Haifa's defense. He is seen as a natural successor to Lisb Asiat in playing style and is valued at 1.2 million euros.

Lonwijk's career began in the Eindhoven academy before moving to Wolves at age 16. Despite early promise and youth international appearances, including a match against Portugal's youth team, he struggled to secure a permanent spot at Wolves. His loan spells included Fortuna Sittard, where he was mostly a substitute, and Plymouth Argyle, where he became a key player and helped win the English League One title in 2022-23 under former Hapoel Tel Aviv owner David Minzberg.

Injuries, particularly recurring hamstring issues, hampered Lonwijk's progress during his loans at Grasshoppers in Switzerland and Huddersfield Town in the English Championship. However, he found stability at Wycombe Wanderers, playing mainly as a right-back and maintaining consistent form with 34 league starts. Wolves intended to keep him for the Championship season but eventually agreed to his transfer to Haifa.

Lonwijk's physical attributes, height, speed, and flexibility, make him a unique asset in Israeli football, where he is expected to complement veteran defender Tsunami. His defensive stats in England's lower leagues show solid aerial and ground duels won, and his passing ability, including long balls, suits Haifa's more attacking style. While his hamstring injuries are a concern, his recent season demonstrated improved fitness and consistency.

The signing was facilitated by Matt Bloomfield, Lonwijk's former coach at Wycombe and Luton Town, who actively pursued the player. Haifa hopes Lonwijk will strengthen their defense with his one-on-one defensive skills and physical presence, potentially forming a strong partnership with Tsunami, who provides tactical leadership. This move marks a significant step for Lonwijk, who has yet to prove himself at a higher competitive level but brings promising attributes to the Israeli Premier League.
