Nigel Lonwijk Joins Maccabi Haifa as New Central Defender

Nigel Lonwijk, a 1.95-meter tall defender, officially signed a three-year contract with Maccabi Haifa on July 24, 2026. Known for his rare combination of height, speed, and flexibility, Lonwijk is seen as a natural successor to Lisb Asiat in style and role. Valued at 1.2 million euros, he brings physicality and agility to the Israeli Premier League club.

Lonwijk's career began in the youth ranks of PSV Eindhoven before moving to Wolverhampton Wanderers at age 16. Despite early promise and a contract renewal, he spent much of his time on loan at various clubs including Fortuna Sittard, Plymouth Argyle, Grasshoppers, Wycombe Wanderers, and Huddersfield Town. His time in England was marked by regular play in lower leagues but also by recurring hamstring injuries that sidelined him multiple times.

A key turning point was his season at Wycombe under coach Matt Bloomfield, who later facilitated Lonwijk's move to Haifa. There, Lonwijk played mainly as a right-back, maintaining fitness and consistency with 34 league starts. His physical attributes stand out, with an average of 10.3 sprints per game and strong defensive duel success rates despite playing in a slower, more physical league.

Compared to Lisb Asiat, who was sold for 2.5 million euros to Bristol City, Lonwijk is still developing but shows promise, especially in one-on-one defensive situations and ball distribution. His ability to deliver long passes complements Haifa's tactical setup, especially alongside veteran defender Tsunami, who is more of a playmaker. Lonwijk's signing is expected to strengthen Haifa's defense with a blend of power and mobility, provided he maintains his fitness.
