Israel Prepares for Possible US-Iran Conflict as Tensions Escalate in Middle East

Israel is increasing its military readiness ahead of the weekend amid expectations of a significant US strike on Iran, which could reignite broader conflict. The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) are bolstering both defensive and offensive positions in anticipation of potential Iranian retaliation, including missile fire toward Israeli territory. Israeli officials stated that US President Donald Trump has not yet decided on the strike but emphasized Israel would only join a large-scale, coordinated operation rather than a limited attack.

Earlier in the week, Iran launched six missiles toward Aqaba, Jordan, with explosions heard in the nearby Israeli city of Eilat. The US military intercepted four missiles, while the rest landed in open areas. Iran claimed attacks targeted US forces at bases in Jordan and Bahrain. A senior Israeli official described the missile launch as a deliberate provocation directed at Israel. Overnight, the US conducted another wave of airstrikes on Iranian military sites, including locations in Tehran and Tabriz, prompting Iran to respond with drone attacks on a US base in western Kuwait.

Iran’s military leadership warned that any US attack on its nuclear facilities would make American and allied interests targets. The US Central Command (CENTCOM) reported that recent strikes focused on Iranian military operations centers, naval capabilities, aircraft hangars, drone storage, and logistical infrastructure. CENTCOM also highlighted Iran’s attacks on over 30 commercial vessels in vital international waterways over the past three months, threatening global trade and maritime freedom.

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio expressed willingness to negotiate but criticized Iran’s seriousness, warning that blocking international shipping lanes poses a global economic threat. Israeli security and political leaders are considering scenarios ranging from full Israeli involvement alongside the US to limited or no direct engagement unless Israeli territory is attacked. Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich and senior military officers indicated a preference for joining only a broad, aggressive US-led campaign rather than partial actions.

Reports from the Wall Street Journal revealed Iran used an advanced ballistic missile, the "Khaybar Shekan," in a recent attack that killed three US soldiers in Jordan. This missile, capable of satellite guidance and a range of approximately 1,500 kilometers, is among Iran’s most lethal and had been previously targeted by Israeli and US strikes but has since been replenished. The situation remains volatile as both sides prepare for possible escalation in the coming days.
