Maccabi Haifa Signs Tall, Versatile Defender Nigel Lonwijk as Lisb Asisat Replacement

Maccabi Haifa has secured the signing of Nigel Lonwijk, a 1.95-meter tall defender from Wolverhampton Wanderers, who is expected to replace Lisb Asisat in the squad. Lonwijk, valued at 1.2 million euros, combines impressive speed and flexibility for his height, making him a natural successor to Asisat’s playing style. His career began in the youth academy of PSV Eindhoven before moving to Wolves at age 16, where he signed a new contract after just a few months.

Lonwijk’s early professional years involved multiple loans across English and European clubs, including Fortuna Sittard, Plymouth Argyle, Grasshoppers, Wycombe Wanderers, and Huddersfield Town. He faced recurring hamstring injuries, notably three within two years, which affected his continuity. Despite this, he showed resilience and adaptability, even playing as a right-back for much of a season under coach Matt Bloomfield at Wycombe.

Statistically, Lonwijk averaged 10.3 sprints per game and demonstrated solid defensive skills with 2.2 ground duels and 2.5 aerial duels won per match in a physically demanding third-tier English league. His passing ability, including 30.6 passes per game with nearly half in the opponent’s half, and capacity for long balls, complements his defensive strengths. This skill set is seen as beneficial alongside Haifa’s other defender, Tsunami, who is less proficient in ball distribution.

Comparisons to Lisb Asisat highlight similarities in physicality and defensive engagement, although Asisat has played at a higher competitive level and was sold for 2.5 million euros to a Championship club. Lonwijk’s one-on-one defensive prowess is particularly valued for Israeli Premier League play, where physical duels and quick transitions are common. Haifa’s acquisition aims to blend Lonwijk’s physical attributes with Tsunami’s experience to strengthen their defensive line.

The signing follows a period of negotiations initiated by Matt Bloomfield, who coached Lonwijk at Wycombe and actively pursued his transfer. Haifa expects Lonwijk to contribute significantly if he maintains fitness, addressing both defensive solidity and offensive set-piece threats due to his height and ball skills.
