Maccabi Haifa Negotiates to Sign Wolves Defender Nigel Lonwijk

Maccabi Haifa is in advanced talks to acquire Nigel Lonwijk, a 23-year-old defender currently with English club Wolverhampton Wanderers (Wolves). The Israeli club aims to complete the deal soon so that Lonwijk can join coach Barak Bachar’s squad in time for the Toto Cup group stage. Lonwijk, of Surinamese-Dutch descent, spent the previous season on loan at Luton Town in England’s third division. He has been with Wolves since 2020 but has had several loan spells at lower-league English clubs including Plymouth Argyle and Wycombe Wanderers. Over his career in England, Lonwijk has made 104 appearances, scoring five goals and assisting three. His contract with Wolves runs through the end of the 2023-24 season. He also has 13 caps for the Netherlands under-16 national team.

This potential signing follows Maccabi Haifa’s recent acquisition of Brazilian defender Tsunami and is part of a busy summer transfer window for the club. So far, Haifa has also signed goalkeeper Omri Glazer, Serbian-American forward Andrea Novkovic, and midfielder Bruninho as they strengthen their squad ahead of the new season.
