Maccabi Haifa Signs Tall, Versatile Defender Nigel Lonwijk as Lisb Issa’s Successor

Maccabi Haifa has secured the signing of Nigel Lonwijk, a 1.95-meter tall defender formerly with Wolverhampton Wanderers, marking a significant addition to their squad. Known for his rare combination of height, speed, and flexibility, Lonwijk is seen as a natural successor to Lisb Issa, a player with a similar style who was recently transferred to Bristol City for 2.5 million euros. Valued at 1.2 million euros, Lonwijk’s physical attributes and playing style have made him a standout since his youth, including appearances for the Netherlands youth teams against Portugal.

Lonwijk’s career began in the Eindhoven academy before moving to Wolves at age 16, where he signed a new contract after quickly advancing. His early professional years involved several loans across English and Swiss clubs, including Fortuna Sittard, Plymouth Argyle, Grasshoppers, Wycombe Wanderers, and Huddersfield Town. Despite recurring hamstring injuries that sidelined him multiple times, Lonwijk demonstrated resilience and adaptability, even playing as a right back during his loan at Wycombe under coach Matt Bloomfield.

Statistically, Lonwijk averaged 10.3 sprints per game and showed solid defensive metrics in a physically demanding League One environment. His ability to win aerial duels and ground challenges, combined with decent passing skills including 30.6 passes per game and 1.9 long balls, suits Maccabi Haifa’s more attacking style. The club expects Lonwijk to complement veteran defender Tsunami, who is more of a cerebral presence, with Lonwijk providing physicality and defensive coverage.

While Lonwijk has yet to prove himself in a top-tier league, his strengths in one-on-one situations and physical dominance are considered valuable assets for Israeli Premier League competition. His signing follows a pattern of recruiting players with potential to develop and contribute significantly, especially in defense. Maccabi Haifa aims to integrate Lonwijk into their defensive line as they prepare for the upcoming season.
