Netanyahu Strongly Condemns Rabbi Lando’s Harsh Criticism of Religious Zionist Soldiers

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu sharply rejected the recent remarks made by Rabbi Dov Lando, a leading Lithuanian ultra-Orthodox figure, who harshly criticized the Religious Zionist community. Netanyahu condemned Rabbi Lando’s statements as "shocking" and emphasized the dedication of Israel Defense Forces soldiers from all sectors, including religious Zionists, secular, and ultra-Orthodox, who risk their lives to protect the state and its citizens. He called for deep appreciation and full support for these soldiers from all parts of Israeli society, including the Torah world.

Rabbi Lando’s comments came during a meeting with leaders from the Mir yeshiva, where he accused the Religious Zionist sector, particularly those wearing knitted kippot, of inciting violence and supporting wars that are not aimed at saving lives but rather for national honor. He described these actions as "murder" and claimed the Religious Zionist community operates without a clear method, prioritizing the state as a supreme value. Rabbi Lando concluded by urging prayers for the current difficult period to pass swiftly.

This confrontation follows Rabbi Lando’s earlier opposition to the right-wing ultra-Orthodox bloc and criticism of Netanyahu after the draft law was removed from the Knesset agenda. A statement from Rabbi Lando’s office clarified that despite reports, there is unity between the Degel HaTorah and Shas parties regarding the status of yeshiva students, but they no longer trust Netanyahu and intend to act solely in the interests of the ultra-Orthodox community, even calling for the dissolution of the Knesset.

The exchange highlights ongoing tensions between the ultra-Orthodox leadership and the Religious Zionist sector, as well as political friction involving Netanyahu and the ultra-Orthodox parties over military conscription and communal priorities.
