Israeli Border Police Shoot Civilian Security Guards After Violent Attack at Qalandiya Checkpoint
An unusual and serious incident occurred Tuesday morning at the security gate near the Qalandiya checkpoint, where Israeli Border Police (Magav) forces were violently attacked by civilian security guards attempting to seize their weapons. The event began when a civilian vehicle carrying several suspects tried to infiltrate through a gate designated exclusively for security forces entering Israeli territory from the West Bank.
When the Border Police approached to verify the occupants' identities, the suspects responded with physical violence, including punches and chokeholds, while trying to wrestle the officers' firearms. In response, one female officer fired a warning shot into the air, but the attackers persisted. Subsequently, another officer fired aimed shots at the lower bodies of two assailants to neutralize the threat. Both suspects and several officers sustained light injuries and received medical treatment on site and later at the hospital.
It was later revealed that the suspects were civilian security guards who were not displaying any identification at the time of the attack. The Border Police unit had been en route to an operational assignment when the incident unfolded. Following the confrontation, the officer who fired the shots administered life-saving first aid until medical teams arrived. The full circumstances of the event are currently under official investigation by security forces.
This incident highlights the tensions and security challenges at the Qalandiya checkpoint, a critical crossing point between the West Bank and Israel, where only authorized security personnel are permitted passage. The Border Police acted in accordance with engagement protocols to protect themselves and maintain control of the checkpoint area.
