Young American Arrested in Jerusalem for Spying for Iranian Intelligence

At the beginning of this month, Jerusalem District Police and the Shin Bet arrested a young American man in his twenties suspected of espionage activities for Iranian intelligence. The arrest followed targeted intelligence received from international security agencies. The suspect's detention was extended, and on Tuesday, a statement of intent to indict was filed against him.

The investigation, conducted by the Jerusalem District Central Unit under a gag order, revealed that over recent months the suspect maintained continuous contact with Iranian intelligence operatives. He was tasked with gathering intelligence, including photographing sensitive sites across Israel. For each operation, he received payments ranging from tens to hundreds of dollars.

Amichai Panta, the lead investigator from the Jerusalem interrogation division, noted that several espionage cases have recently been uncovered, some occurring during wartime, with suspects attempting to assist enemy forces in executing plans within Israeli territory. Following periodic court extensions of his detention, the prosecution intends to formally charge the suspect in the coming days and will likely request his continued detention until the conclusion of legal proceedings.
