Israeli Police Arrest American Citizen for Espionage on Behalf of Iran

On June 9, 2026, Israeli police and the Shin Bet arrested a 20-year-old American citizen on suspicion of espionage and harming state security. The arrest followed intelligence received from international security agencies. The investigation, conducted under a gag order by the Jerusalem District Police Central Unit, revealed that in recent months the suspect maintained contact with Iranian intelligence operatives. During this period, he carried out various tasks including documenting and photographing sensitive sites in Israel. For these activities, he was paid between tens to hundreds of dollars per mission.

Investigator Amichai Panta from the Jerusalem District Police interrogation division stated that several espionage suspects have been uncovered recently, some acting during wartime and aiding enemy plans within Israeli territory. He emphasized ongoing cooperation with the Shin Bet to detect, arrest, and prosecute anyone threatening national security. The suspect's detention has been extended multiple times by the court to facilitate the investigation. Following the completion of the police inquiry and evidence compilation, prosecutors filed a statement of intent to indict the suspect and requested his continued detention until the legal proceedings conclude.
