American Citizen Arrested in Israel for Alleged Espionage on Behalf of Iran
Israeli police and the Shin Bet security service have completed their investigation into a 20-year-old American citizen suspected of espionage for Iranian intelligence. The suspect was arrested on June 9, 2026, following intelligence received from international security agencies. Authorities revealed that over recent months, the individual maintained contact with Iranian intelligence operatives and carried out various tasks, including photographing and documenting sensitive sites. For each mission, he received payments ranging from tens to hundreds of dollars.
The investigation was conducted under a gag order by the Jerusalem District Police's Central Unit. Amichai Penta, head of the interrogation division, stated that several espionage suspects have been uncovered recently, some acting during wartime to aid enemies within Israeli territory. The suspect's detention has been extended multiple times as the investigation progressed. With the evidentiary foundation now established, prosecutors have submitted a statement of intent to indict and requested the suspect remain in custody until the conclusion of legal proceedings.
