Israeli Police Arrest American Citizen Suspected of Spying for Iran
Israeli police and the Shin Bet have completed their investigation into a 20-year-old American citizen suspected of espionage activities on behalf of Iranian intelligence. The suspect was arrested on June 9 following intelligence received from international security agencies. The investigation, conducted under a gag order by the Jerusalem District Unit in cooperation with Shin Bet, revealed that over recent months the suspect maintained contact with Iranian intelligence operatives and carried out tasks including photographing and documenting sensitive sites in Israel. He allegedly received payments ranging from tens to hundreds of dollars per mission.
Amichai Penta, the lead investigator from the Jerusalem District interrogation division, stated that several espionage suspects have been uncovered recently, some acting during wartime and aiding enemies within Israeli territory. He emphasized the ongoing commitment of Israeli security forces to detect, arrest, and prosecute individuals threatening national security. The suspect's detention has been extended multiple times by the court during the investigation. Following the completion of evidence gathering, a prosecution statement was filed today, with an indictment expected to be submitted in the coming days alongside a request to keep the suspect in custody until the trial concludes.
