Israeli player Deni Avdija delivered an impressive performance for the Portland Trail Blazers in their 136-129 victory over the Los Angeles Lakers. Several NBA legends, including Carmelo Anthony, Reggie Miller, and Robert Horry, lauded Avdija's significance to the team, emphasizing that his impact extends beyond statistics.
Miller, a commentator for NBC, stated that Avdija is "the man who will make a difference for this team" and expressed his admiration for Avdija's game. Anthony highlighted Avdija's role alongside guards Jah Morant and Damian Lillard, noting how Avdija's size and scoring ability, particularly from outside, compensate for the guards' smaller stature. Anthony also praised Avdija's decision-making, patience, and ability to draw fouls, which eases the offensive burden on Morant and Lillard.
Commentators observed that the Trail Blazers perform better when Avdija directs the offense, even more so than when Morant or Lillard lead. Horry, a former Laker and current team commentator, was particularly impressed by Avdija's quickness in attacking the basket despite his size.
An article on Blazer's Edge noted that coach Mike Nurie's strategy of keeping Avdija on the court with the second unit, while Morant and Lillard rested, allowed Avdija more freedom to manage the offense. This role, blending starter and second-unit leader, was seen as beneficial. The team's depth also allowed Avdija to conserve energy for a strong fourth-quarter performance.
Following the win, projections for the Trail Blazers have become more ambitious. Commentator James Worthy acknowledged the team's potential, while Brett Siegel suggested the Blazers have the makings of a top-four team in the Western Conference.
