Deni Avdija Key to Portland Trail Blazers' Success, Say Reporters

Portland Trail Blazers reporters believe Israeli player Deni Avdija is crucial to the team's success this season, even with the additions of Damian Lillard and Ja Morant. The Blazers have started the season 2-0, with their next game against the Los Angeles Lakers. Reporters Conor Bergin of Blazer's Edge and Casey Holdahl of KATU News analyzed the team's prospects, emphasizing Avdija's importance.

Bergin noted that last season, Avdija carried much of the offensive load, with defenses focusing heavily on him. The arrivals of Lillard and Morant are expected to alleviate this pressure, allowing Avdija to operate more freely and efficiently. "This will only give a boost to Deni and the Blazers," Bergin stated, predicting that Avdija will have more comfortable driving lanes and open looks for catch-and-shoot threes. He also suggested Avdija might return to his previous defensive capabilities due to reduced offensive burden.

Holdahl echoed these sentiments, calling Avdija the team's "best player" and the "key to the team's success." He highlighted that Lillard's return to Portland was partly motivated by the opportunity to play with a versatile player like Avdija. Holdahl believes the current Blazers roster is a better fit for Avdija, enabling him to carry the team to wins. He suggested that defenses will no longer be able to pack the paint against Avdija due to the threat of Lillard's three-point shooting.

Regarding team goals, reporters stated the minimum expectation for Portland is to make the playoffs. They acknowledged the improvement in the offseason but noted that the entire NBA has become more competitive. Key factors for the Blazers' success include staying healthy, particularly Avdija and Lillard, and potential mid-season trades. The development of younger players like Donovan Clingan, Tsamani Camara, and Scoot Henderson, along with Ja Morant's performance, will also be critical. There's also optimism about player Rob Williams, who has reportedly looked impressive.

While Avdija's offensive load is expected to decrease, reporters believe he has a realistic chance of being named to an All-NBA team this season, considering his talent and the improved team environment. "It's hard to say that the expectation for Deni is to be chosen for one of the All-NBA teams because the NBA is so talented," Bergin commented, "but it's quite a logical goal for him."
