The Portland Trail Blazers are generating significant buzz in Israel, largely due to the prominent role of Israeli player Deni Avdija. This newfound national investment in the team echoes past eras when Israelis rallied behind NBA figures like Matthew Dellavedova and Omri Casspi during significant playoff runs. Avdija, now in his seventh NBA season, is seen as the franchise player for Portland, drawing parallels to David Blatt's coaching tenure with the Cleveland Cavaliers and Casspi's time with the Golden State Warriors.
Last season, Portland's late-season surge and playoff appearance captivated Israeli fans, who found themselves cheering for the team's collective success rather than just Avdija's individual performance. Key moments, like Toummani Camara's dramatic baskets and Scoot Henderson's game-winning alley-oop assisted by Avdija, fueled this national excitement. The article suggests this connection will deepen this season with the additions of Damian Lillard and Ja Morant, making early morning games a regular occurrence for Israeli viewers.
Casey Holdahl, a senior writer for the Trail Blazers, expressed his satisfaction with the growing Israeli fanbase, noting that the players feel the support. He highlighted Avdija's role in providing hope to fans in Israel during difficult times and acknowledged the increased attention the team receives due to this connection. These aspirations are crucial as he is playing for a career-defining contract in the summer of 2027. His personal coach believes he is among the top 10 players globally, and Avdija aims to prove he belongs in the top 15.
