Israeli NBA player Deni Avdija is drawing significant praise in the United States following the Portland Trail Blazers' perfect 2-0 start to the season. Avdija has been a standout performer in victories over the Phoenix Suns and Sacramento Kings.
Despite the arrivals of Ja Morant and the return of Damian Lillard, which might have suggested a reduced role for Avdija, American sports commentators and content creators are highlighting his central importance to the team. One NBA content creator with tens of thousands of followers noted that Avdija remains one of his favorite players to watch, even with Morant on board. He suggested that Avdija could be a "potential MVP candidate" if his development continues at its current pace.
The creator further elaborated that Avdija has reached a career stage where opposing teams are deploying double-teams against him. His exceptional court vision, understanding of player positioning, and remarkable passing ability were specifically praised. The freedom Avdija now has on offense, not needing to constantly control the ball, is seen as a key factor in his improved play and ability to contribute in diverse ways.
Jason Quick, writing for The Athletic, described Avdija as an "unstoppable force" and the Trail Blazers' primary offensive threat, even with Morant and Lillard present. Quick emphasized Avdija's unique skill set, including his defense, clutch shooting, and often-overlooked contributions that have been crucial to Portland's success in late-game situations.
