The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) announced Thursday it will begin a process to review the awarding of commendations and decorations to soldiers for acts of heroism and sacrifice during the battles of October 7, 2023, in the Gaza border region. A commanders' conference is scheduled for Wednesday, October 14, where the framework for evaluating these deeds and granting the awards will be presented. The conference will be led by the Head of the Manpower Directorate, Major General Dadi Bar-Kalifa, and the President of the Military Court of Appeals, Major General Orly Markman, with participation from commanders across all IDF brigades and fronts.

According to the IDF, the goal of this process is to recognize the acts of bravery performed during the fighting and to preserve the combat legacy for future generations. The military stated that the review will be conducted with strict adherence to factual accuracy, sensitivity, and transparency. All bereaved families have been informed in advance about the process, its objectives, and its significance.

Following the launch, the IDF will present the main stages and execution methods of the review. Concurrently, exceptional acts of heroism by civilians during October 7 will be forwarded, where appropriate, for review by the advisory committee to the President of Israel, as part of the existing mechanism for awarding the "President's Award for Civilian Heroism." This mechanism has already reviewed cases and granted awards during the ongoing war.
