The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) will begin a process to review and award commendations and decorations for acts of heroism during the battles of October 7, 2023. A commanders' conference to launch this initiative is scheduled for next Wednesday, October 14, led by the Head of the Manpower Directorate, Major General Dadi Bar Kalifa, and the President of the Military Court of Appeals, Major General Orly Markman.

The IDF stated that the goal of this process is to provide appropriate recognition for exceptional acts of bravery and to preserve the legacy of combat. The military emphasized that the entire process will be conducted with sensitivity, transparency, and factual accuracy, involving a thorough examination of each case. All bereaved families have been informed about the launch and objectives of this initiative.

In addition to the bravery displayed by soldiers, the IDF acknowledged outstanding civilian acts of heroism during the October 7 attacks. These civilian cases will be forwarded to the advisory committee for the President of Israel for review, under the existing mechanism for awarding the "President's Medal for Civilian Bravery." This medal has already been awarded to individuals during the ongoing conflict.
