Three years after the October 7th Hamas attack, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) is initiating a process to review and award commendations and decorations for acts of heroism during the battles of Simchat Torah. A commanders' conference will be held this Wednesday, led by Head of the Manpower Directorate Dudu Bar-Klipa and President of the Military Court of Appeals Orly Markman, with participation from commanders across all IDF brigades and fronts.

The conference will present the framework for examining the heroic and sacrificial deeds of IDF personnel during the Simchat Torah battles in the Gaza border region. The IDF stated that the process aims to provide "appropriate recognition" for the exceptional bravery displayed and to "preserve and impart the legacy of combat heroism for future generations." The entire process will be managed meticulously, with attention to detail and factual accuracy, conducted with "sensitivity and transparency."

Ahead of the process's launch, all bereaved families have been updated on its existence, goals, and significance. The IDF will subsequently present the execution and key stages of the process, maintaining transparency throughout.

In addition to military heroism, the battles also saw exceptional civilian acts of bravery. Suitable cases involving extraordinary civilian heroism will be forwarded to the advisory committee for the President of Israel for consideration under the existing mechanism for awarding the "President's Medal for Civilian Heroism." Additional cases will also be examined by the committee, similar to those reviewed thus far.

The IDF stated, "The IDF views honoring the heroic and sacrificial acts of its soldiers and commemorating the combat legacy as an integral part of its duty to its soldiers, its fallen, and their families."
