Netanyahu and Lapid Clash Over Security Warnings Following Plane Incident

A heated exchange has erupted between Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and opposition leader Yair Lapid following a dramatic incident involving a Flydubai plane. Lapid accused Netanyahu's office of lying about the nature of security warnings provided to him the previous evening, claiming the update did not mention anything similar to the plane event.

Netanyahu's office countered that Lapid was indeed briefed on a significant global increase in terror threats, stating, "Contrary to Lapid's words, the military secretariat updated him yesterday that there is a significant increase in global terrorism on a scale not seen in years." Lapid swiftly responded, calling the claim a lie and asserting that the warning about overseas activity has existed for over two years and was not related to the plane incident. He accused Netanyahu of attempting to exploit the situation to retroactively justify the earlier warnings and of failing to prepare for potential threats.

The dispute stems from a security briefing Lapid requested from Netanyahu the day before, prompted by a public warning from the Prime Minister about potential attacks on Israel around the upcoming elections. After the meeting, Lapid stated he would not reveal classified information but criticized Netanyahu for publicly alarming the public without justification.

Netanyahu's Likud party criticized Lapid's immediate public statement after the briefing, suggesting it was pre-written. Lapid, however, distinguished between classified intelligence and what he perceived as the public misuse of threats.

The Flydubai plane incident, initially investigated as a possible non-security related event, later involved suspicions of a hijacking attempt, intensifying scrutiny over the prior security updates provided to Lapid.
