Israel Evacuates Citizens From Ethiopia Amid Security Escalation

A group of Israelis stranded in Lalibela, northern Ethiopia, due to a worsening security situation has been evacuated by helicopter, Israel's Foreign Ministry announced. The operation took place on September 29-30, following three days of coordination involving Foreign Minister Gideon Saar, ministry officials, the Israeli embassy in Addis Ababa, and Ethiopian authorities. The Israelis were transported to a secure area from which they will continue their journey to the capital. The embassy will accompany the group until their arrival in Addis Ababa, the ministry stated.

Earlier reports indicated that approximately 20 Israelis and around 30 foreign nationals were trapped in Lalibela after fighting resumed between government forces and armed groups. Flights to the area had been suspended, and ground routes were deemed unsafe. According to Kan news, the stranded Israelis experienced power outages and a shortage of cash, expressing concerns about the lack of accessible medical care for elderly travelers.
