The Union of Local Authorities in Israel has issued a public warning regarding widespread phishing scams targeting residents across the country. These fraudulent messages impersonate official communications from local municipalities, demanding payment for various municipal services such as property taxes, levies, water bills, and other city fees. The messages include links for payment, which the Union urges the public not to click.

Recent weeks have seen reports from residents in various authorities who received these deceptive messages. The primary concern is that these scams aim to trick individuals into believing they have an outstanding debt to their local authority, prompting them to enter their payment details. Clicking the provided link and submitting credit card information could lead to identity theft and unauthorized charges.

In response, the Union of Local Authorities has strongly advised residents: "Do not pay via a link you received in a message." Instead, they recommend accessing the official website of the local authority or logging into a personal account independently to verify any outstanding payments. It is crucial not to share credit card or personal details through links received in messages without confirming they originate from an official payment channel.

Residents using the digital wallet MuniBox can also check their payment status without relying on message links. Within the PayBox personal area, users can view both open and completed payments and make new payments directly through the app. The Union reiterates that if there is any doubt about a payment notification, individuals should refrain from clicking the attached link and instead navigate directly to the local authority's official channels to verify payment details.
