The Center for Local Government is issuing a warning about fraudulent SMS and digital messages impersonating local authorities and demanding payment via links. In recent weeks, residents in various municipalities have reported receiving messages concerning property taxes, levies, water bills, and other municipal payments. Clicking on these fake links and entering credit card details could expose residents to identity theft and unauthorized charges.
The Center advises against paying through links received via message. Instead, individuals should independently access their local authority's official website or personal portal to check for outstanding payments. Personal or credit card information should not be provided through a message link before verifying it is an official payment channel.
Residents using the MuniBox digital wallet can view open and completed payments within their PayBox personal area and pay directly through the app, eliminating the need for a payment link in a message. If there is any doubt about a payment notification received, the recommendation is not to click the link but to access the authority's official channel directly to verify payment details.
