Israeli Ambassador to US Shares Son's Critical Condition After Terror Attack

The life of Neria Leiter, son of Israeli Ambassador to the U.S. Yehiel Leiter, remains in critical condition following a terror attack near Modi'in on September 23, 2026, the ambassador announced on Sunday, September 27. Despite the grave situation, the family has observed several encouraging signs. "Neria's life is still hanging by a thread, but we have seen some encouraging signs and are holding onto them with hope," Ambassador Leiter posted on X, formerly Twitter. He expressed gratitude for the support and prayers for his son, also requesting prayers for others severely injured in the attack.

Neria Leiter, a reservist from the settlement of Havat Yair in Samaria, was injured when a Palestinian terrorist rammed a vehicle into a checkpoint on Highway 443. IDF soldiers at the scene neutralized the attacker. Neria was transported to Shaare Zedek Medical Center in Jerusalem, where medical staff are continuing to fight for his life.

The attack occurred just before Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's scheduled address at the UN. Ambassador Leiter, who was meant to accompany the Prime Minister, instead flew from New York to Israel. Upon his arrival, doctors had managed to stabilize Neria's condition. The ambassador had previously stated he was returning home unsure if his son would survive.

Adding to the family's distress, Ambassador Leiter's elder daughter, Sarah, went into labor approximately 40 meters away from Neria's intensive care unit, two weeks before her due date. This comes after another son, Major Moshe Yedi'dya Leiter, was killed in Gaza on November 10, 2023.

In May 2026, Neria had written on Facebook about completing reserve duty, having been called up following his brother's death. He described the demanding service and his decision to return to the army after his brother's death, stating it was difficult but necessary while his comrades continued to serve. He emphasized personal responsibility and the honor of serving alongside diverse individuals who unite in times of need.
