WhatsApp Business to End Free Customer Service Messages Next Month
WhatsApp Business is set to eliminate its free tier for customer service messages sent within a 24-hour window, effective October 1, 2026. Meta, the parent company, announced a significant overhaul of its pricing model for the WhatsApp Business Platform API. Previously, businesses were exempt from delivery fees for responses within this "service window." However, under the new policy, every service message, whether sent by a human agent or a third-party bot, will incur a charge per delivery.
In Israel, the new tariff will align with operational messages, costing approximately $0.0053, or about 2 Israeli agorot, per message. This update specifically targets companies and organizations utilizing the enterprise API to connect with CRM systems, multi-agent service centers, and bots. Businesses that fail to provide valid payment information by September 30 will face a complete block on their service messages starting next month.
This change does not affect individual users or those using the standard WhatsApp Business app for direct, manual responses from a smartphone, which will remain free. Concurrently, Meta is introducing its own AI agents, the Meta Business Agent, and adopting a pricing structure common in the language model industry. This involves a global flat rate of $2 per million tokens, covering both AI processing and message delivery. A typical response is estimated to cost businesses between $0.04 and $0.05, based on an anticipated consumption of 20,000 to 25,000 tokens per message, with more complex queries priced according to processing depth.
