Driver Caught Speeding at 217 km/h on Highway 90

Police on Highway 90 in southern Israel apprehended a 25-year-old driver from Eilat who was traveling at 217 km/h in a new BMW. The legal speed limit on that stretch of road is 90 km/h. Accounting for the instrument's legal margin of error, the driver was cited for exceeding the speed limit by up to 212 km/h.

During the investigation, police developed suspicions that the driver may have been under the influence of drugs. The driver was detained for questioning and subsequently taken into custody. His driver's license has been suspended for 30 days, and his vehicle was impounded.

While the driver's speed was exceptionally high, it did not set a new record for speeding violations in Israel. In April 2020, police stopped a Honda Accord on Highway 6 traveling at 245 km/h, which remains the highest recorded speed violation in recent years. The speed limit on that section of Highway 6 was 120 km/h.

Israeli law categorizes speeding offenses into three degrees. The most severe involves exceeding the speed limit on a highway by more than 41 km/h. Such violations typically result in a one-month license suspension and a court summons for the driver.
