Israeli Police Arrest 19-Year-Old Bedouin Driver for Reckless 201 km/h Speeding on Road 60
A 19-year-old new driver from the Bedouin community in southern Israel was apprehended after being caught speeding at 201 kilometers per hour on Road 60, more than 110 km/h above the 90 km/h speed limit. The excessive speed was recorded using a laser speed measuring device during a targeted operation by the National Traffic Police (Yemata Negev) and the Jeep Unit of the towns.
When police signaled the driver to stop, he attempted a dangerous escape by turning off all vehicle lights to disappear into the darkness of the Negev, endangering other road users. Officers, prepared in advance, deployed spike strips along his route, forcing the vehicle to stop. Body camera footage shows a tense arrest moment, with an officer drawing a gun and flashlight, ordering the driver to turn off the engine, while a female officer sternly reprimanded him for his reckless driving and flight before handcuffing him.
Following the arrest, the driver was taken for interrogation at Beersheba police station and subsequently jailed. A court hearing extended his detention until further notice. Police emphasized that this enforcement is part of the "Committed to Life" national campaign by the Traffic Department and the National Road Safety Authority, aimed at increasing road safety enforcement to combat road violence and reduce fatalities.
