A 16-year-old from the Bedouin diaspora in the Negev was arrested this week after a dramatic police pursuit involving ground units and a police helicopter. He was caught after driving an ATV recklessly, without a helmet and without a license, and allegedly trying to flee through open terrain in a way that endangered bystanders.
According to police, traffic officers spotted him during routine enforcement while he was riding without protective headgear. Once he noticed the officers, he accelerated and attempted to escape, continuing to drive dangerously and violating traffic laws in the process. Police said the chase resembled a recent manhunt in Tamra and was aided by aerial surveillance that helped officers track him and locate him quickly.
After his arrest, investigators found that the teen, a resident of the Danfiri tribe, had never held a driver’s license and had been operating the vehicle without basic safety equipment. He was taken for questioning at the Segev Shalom police station and is due to appear before a juvenile court.
The ATV used in the incident was seized and impounded for 30 days. Police said the move is meant to prevent further dangerous use and to signal a firm response to reckless driving, especially amid what they described as a worrying rise in similar cases in southern Israel. Police also said they will continue using overt enforcement and advanced technology, including helicopters and cameras, as part of the nationwide Operation New Order in the Negev and Bedouin communities.
