A 16-year-old from the Bedouin diaspora in the Negev was arrested this week after a dangerous ATV chase involving both ground units and a police helicopter. Police said the teen, from the Danfiri tribe, was riding without a helmet and without a driver’s license, and his reckless driving put passersby at risk.
The incident began during a routine traffic enforcement operation, when traffic officers spotted him on the ATV without protective gear. Once he noticed the police, he tried to flee and drove in a way that endangered road users and openly violated traffic laws. Police used a combined aerial and ground response to track him in open terrain and quickly locate him.
After the arrest, officers found that he had never held a driver’s license and had been riding without basic safety equipment. He was taken to the Segev Shalom police station for questioning and was summoned to juvenile court.
The ATV was also seized and impounded for 30 days. Police said the move is meant to prevent further dangerous use and to send a clear message against reckless driving. They described the case as part of a worrying pattern in the south, saying there has been a rise in similar incidents in recent weeks involving young unlicensed drivers. Police added that they will keep using visible enforcement and advanced technology, including helicopters and cameras, as part of the broader “New Order” operation in the Negev and the Bedouin diaspora area, launched by the national security minister and the police commissioner to enforce the law and combat crime and dangerous driving.
