16-Year-Old Driver Arrested After Dramatic Southern Israel Police Chase
A 16-year-old from the area was arrested after a dramatic police pursuit in southern Israel that was recorded on camera and released by police on Sunday. According to the Israel Police, the incident happened during a planned enforcement operation by Unit Yoav officers in the Southern District.
An officer on a motorcycle spotted a suspicious vehicle. When the driver noticed the police, he fled in an attempt to avoid being checked. The officer chased the vehicle as the suspect drove at excessive speeds and endangered road users.
The chase ended when the teenager lost control of the car and it overturned on the side of the road. Police arrested him at the scene and took him to the Sdeh Shalom station for further questioning.
Checks at the scene found that the minor had no driving license and that the vehicle’s registration was also not valid. Police said the arrest is part of their ongoing fight against serious traffic offenses, illegal driving and disobeying police orders, which endanger public safety. On Thursday, police are expected to ask the court to extend the teenager’s detention. The article also noted a similar chase in Ashkelon several weeks ago, in which a young driver fled in the wrong direction and was later found to have drugs in the car and to have been driving while disqualified.
