Israelis Cross Into Syria, IDF Recovers Them, Cites Security Risk

Fourteen Israeli civilians crossed the border into Syria on Tuesday evening, prompting an immediate response from the Israel Defense Forces (IDF). An IDF unit was dispatched, located the individuals, and returned them to Israeli territory. The group, identified as activists from the "Halutzei HaBasan" (Pioneers of the Golan) movement, stated their intention was to promote Israeli settlement in the area.

According to the movement, the activists entered the area of "Neve HaBasan," which is under IDF control in Syria, returning to a spot previously occupied by families from the movement before they were evacuated. This marks a repeated action by the movement to reach the territory.

The IDF strongly condemned the incident, labeling it a "severe disruption to operational activity and a danger to the security of IDF forces operating in the area." The military emphasized that the individuals would be transferred to the Israel Police for further handling.

The IDF called for legal action against those involved, stating, "Law enforcement agencies are required to exhaust legal proceedings with those involved, in order to prevent these citizens from repeatedly engaging in this phenomenon, which constitutes a criminal offense." The "Halutzei HaBasan" movement explained that their action aimed to advance the idea of legal Israeli settlement in the Golan Heights, expressing hope that their actions would expedite actual settlement.

The movement indicated that their return was motivated by perceived political and on-the-ground support for settlement, which they felt was insufficient to bring about implementation, thus prompting them to "push from below."
