Israelis Crossing into Syria Detained, Returned by IDF

Fourteen Israeli civilians crossed the border into Syria near Aloni HaShavom on Tuesday evening, ending a period of quiet regarding such border crossings. An Israel Defense Forces (IDF) unit quickly responded, located the individuals, and returned them to Israeli territory. The civilians were subsequently arrested and handed over to the police for further processing.

The IDF issued a strong condemnation of the incident, labeling it a severe disruption to operational activities and a danger to the security of IDF forces in the area. The military urged law enforcement to prosecute those involved to prevent repeat offenses, noting that such actions constitute a criminal offense.

The group, identifying themselves as "Pioneers of the Golan" (Chalutzei HaBasan), stated that they crossed into territory controlled by the IDF, near the Circassian village of Bir al-Ajam. They explained their intention was to return to a location called "Neve HaBasan," which had previously been settled by families from their movement before being evacuated.

According to the group, their actions were motivated by a desire to advance Israeli settlement in the Golan Heights. They claimed there is support for this idea from both political circles and individuals on the ground, but that this support has not translated into practical implementation. The activists aimed to "push from below" in the hope of achieving actual settlement soon. They also stated that military and police systems are aware of their movement's policy and expect law enforcement to act in a manner befitting a democratic state.
