Israeli Civilians Cross Into Syria Again; IDF Demands Legal Action to Prevent Recurrence

Three Israeli civilians affiliated with the "Pioneers of Bashan" movement crossed into Syrian territory on the night of April 24, 2025. After spending the night in Syria, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) located and returned them to Israel, where they were detained for police questioning. The IDF condemned the incident, calling it a serious disruption to operational activities and a danger to the soldiers stationed along the border. They urged law enforcement to take strict legal measures against those involved to prevent repeated unauthorized crossings, which constitute a criminal offense.

The "Pioneers of Bashan" activists aim to establish settlements in parts of Syria and frequently attempt to sway public opinion to support their cause. They have crossed into Syrian territory dozens of times, sometimes damaging border fences and locks. Although they are occasionally arrested and handed over to the police, they are often released without facing full legal consequences. The IDF expressed concern that these unauthorized crossings divert military attention and pose risks such as exposure to enemy fire, explosives, or kidnapping, potentially leading to more severe incidents.

In a notable incident in August 2025, about 40 individuals from the Golan Heights, Samaria, and Hebron, including nine families, entered the demilitarized zone in the Golan to hold a cornerstone-laying ceremony for a new settlement named "Neve Bashan," after the Syrian city of Neve. Seven youths from the group crossed further into Syria, planted an Israeli flag and a sign, and were subsequently evacuated back to Israel by the IDF. They were detained and questioned by police but released the following day. The IDF described the group as irresponsible and emphasized the need for legal accountability to prevent future unauthorized border crossings.
