IDF Warns of Security Risks as Right-Wing Activists Cross into Syrian Territory

The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) have reported a sharp increase in incidents involving right-wing activists illegally crossing into Syrian territory near Mount Hermon, attempting to establish Jewish settlements. Last night, three Israeli civilians crossed the border but were located and returned to Israel after nearly 24 hours. Senior IDF officials warn these incursions pose a serious security and diplomatic threat, diverting military resources from monitoring armed enemies to pursuing these activists, many of whom are minors affiliated with the ideological group calling themselves 'Pioneers of Bashan.' The IDF refers to them as 'Bashan rioters' due to their illegal actions.

The activists use tools to cut through border fences and exploit difficult terrain and poor visibility conditions on the slopes of Mount Hermon to infiltrate Syrian-controlled areas. The IDF emphasizes the unique operational challenges in Syria, where unlike Lebanon or Gaza, civilian presence remains in the security zone, increasing the risk to those crossing illegally. The military highlights that hostile elements on the Syrian side closely monitor these activities and seek opportunities to harm the activists.

The IDF has criticized the Israeli Police for insufficient enforcement, urging stricter legal action against repeat offenders. Police responded that they are actively prosecuting cases, with seven investigations recently forwarded to the prosecution. However, they note that many suspects do not cross the internationally recognized border line, complicating legal proceedings.

The 'Pioneers of Bashan' movement claims it faces discriminatory treatment from the police and military but insists that arrests and restraining orders will not deter their mission to promote Jewish settlement in the Bashan region. Following the recent detention of three activists who held a prayer service in the Syrian settlement of Tal Hermon, the group called for calm and an end to what they described as unnecessary provocations and evacuations.
