Israeli Military Seeks More Submarines Amid Turkish Naval Buildup
The Israeli military has requested an increase in its submarine fleet to eight vessels, citing the "growing" Turkish naval power as the primary reason. According to Israeli Army Radio on Tuesday, the Israeli military is closely monitoring the Turkish navy's recent acquisition of submarines, noting a "significant increase" in its submarine and advanced German-made naval unit fleet.
Turkey currently possesses 14 submarines and is expected to expand its fleet to 18 in the coming years. In contrast, Israel has five submarines, with a sixth expected soon. The Israeli military has submitted a report to political leadership recommending the expansion of its submarine fleet to eight vessels in the near future.
Israel has acquired six German-made submarines in recent years, in addition to older vessels. The military recommended exercising an option to purchase a seventh submarine under a recent agreement with Germany, which allows for the acquisition of an additional submarine at the previously agreed price. Each submarine costs approximately one billion euros.
Israeli security officials indicated that the procurement process for one or two additional submarines will likely commence after the upcoming Israeli elections at the end of next month and will depend on the formation of the subsequent Israeli government.
